THE MASQUERADERS

“YEE-PAH!”

THEY RATTLE   AND   SHAKE
JUMP AND DANCE
THE APATAMPA AND ADOWA
IN SPRIGHTLY RAFFIA SKIRTS AND SMOCKS
TO THE DONDO AND ATUMPANI
YEARNING FOR NAKED JEANS AND FRAGILE HEELS
TO ‘JERK’ AND ‘SNAP’ TO CRANK AND RAGGA.

“PURBLIND!” I SAY “MYOPIC!”

“CHAFF!” THEY RETORT AND SPIT AT THEIR ROOTS
YEARNING FOR THE INDIGENES OF AN ALIEN.
THEY EAT FUFU AND AKPLE
WITH KITHS AND KINS CROWDED AROUND THE ASANKA
YEARNING FOR A SOLEMN DINNERHALL.

“HYPOCRITES!”

WHETHER THEY LOVE IT OR NOT
THEIR HERITAGE BURNS WILDLY IN THEIR BLOOD,
THOUGH THEY YEARN FOR ANOTHER
WHICH IS ONLY A PLOW IN THE SANDS.
IT STAYS WITH THEM LIKE SHADOWS FOREVER.

  1. Well you will agree with me that we display our rich culture in many ways. In our poem "The Masqueraders", it was made manifest in our food, dance and music. Through these common day to day activities the poet clarifies the point that though some attempts are been made to alter this, it will not see the light of day
